2 Parcial (Jhon Erick Martinez)

Conceptos prerrequisitos:
  • Feelings and emotions in general.
  • Concept of sadness.
  • Symptoms in medicine.
  • Medicaments or medical treatments.

Conceptos por aprender:
  • Depression.
  • Depression symptoms and warning signs.
  • Depression causes and risk factors.
  • Aids to get over depression.

Estructuras gramaticales prerrequisitos:
  • Simple present, present continuous and will.

Estructuras gramaticales por aprender:
  • Simple past, past continuous and would in past.

Activity part 1

1. Listen twice to a video about depression, and answer the questions. The video is taken from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWFuQR_Wt4M.

What’s depression?

What do stereotypes say about depressed people?

How is depression defined?

Fill out the table with the symptoms heard in each category.

Feelings
Behavior
Thoughts

What’s the nature of depression symptoms?

What is said about the factors that possibly cause depression?

What’s the treatment for depression?

Let’s review some vocabulary about feelings and emotions. What feelings/emotions are related to depression?

Grammar part

Now that we know what depression is and some vocabulary about feelings and emotions, we can share our memories related to depression or deep sadness. However, first we need to know how to express our ideas in past tense. To achieve that, we are going to study the simple past, the past continuous and would to talk about memories with the aid of a video.

Simple past:
  • Most verbs in simple past end in –ed; however, there are irregular verbs.
  • The past of the verb be is was/were.
  • In questions and negative sentences we use did/didn’t + the verb in base form.
  • The tense is used for finished situations or events.

Past continuous:
  • To express temporary situations in the past.
  • It can be used along with the past simple to say that something happened in the middle of something else.
  • The basic structure is subject + verb to be in past + gerund. For questions, it is verb to be in past + subject + gerund.

Would in past:
  • To talk about habits in the past.
  • The structure is subject + would + verb in base form. In questions, it is would + subject + verb in base form.

 Activity part 2

Have you ever had depression or a deep sadness? Listen two or three times to K’lee’s story of depression and answer the questions. The video is taken from http://www.depression.org.nz/Video/303755fa-a625-4824-9f04-814de6feadd9.

Why was she depressed?

What were the symptoms of depression in her case?

Why didn’t she look for support?

Post-listening:
  • Retell someone’s sad story (it can be any person) or your own sad story.

Segundo Parcial Viviana Silva ACTIVIDAD CLIL

ACTIVIDADES

Primera actividad:

The objective of this first activity is that you learn how to describe events that happened in the past. You have to create sentences or paragraphs if possible.
Watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DD6P9U1kwxA take some notes of what you see. Make sure those notes are relevant and as complete as possible. Then, try to write some sentences describing what you saw.
Your sentences should be written in past simple and they should include the vocabulary that you learnt in the video that you saw at the beginning (as more vocabulary you include as more points you will receive). You will have some extra points if you include the players’ names.

Segunda actividad:

REAL HISTORY
This is a game that we –Hasbro, Real Madrid and I- designed especially for you.
Instructions
You will receive some cards, in one side of the cards there is an image, in the other side of the cards you will find some key words and a rule.
The objective of the game is that you write a history based on the image of the card, including all the key words written behind (if you omit a word the computer will subtract points from you). Finally, the rule indicates the specific tense in which you are going to write your history.
Use your iPad or iPhone to download the app "Real History", there you will find a chronometer which is going to measure the time that you expend writing your history. Then, you press the “send” button and the computer will search for grammar or spelling mistakes.
Finally, you send your history and challenge your friends. To beat you, they should write their history in less time and with fewer errors than you. You will be competing with them and with you all the time.
At the end of each month, the player with more points will receive a special prize. It could be a shirt, a ball, or something really cool (we will surprise you).
LET’S PLAY!

Reading comprehension: Modern Olympic Games
Originally, the ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. However, Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894 and initiated the modern Olympic Games.

As the decision-making body, the IOC is responsible for choosing the host city for each Olympic Games. The host city is responsible for organizing and funding a celebration of the Games. The Olympic program, consisting of the sports to be contested at the Games, is also determined by the IOC. The celebration of the Games encompasses many rituals and symbols, such as the Olympic flag and torch, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.

The evolution of the Olympic Movement during the 20th and 21st centuries has resulted in several changes to the Olympic Games. Some of these adjustments include the creation of the Winter Games for ice and winter sports, the Paralympic Games for athletes with a physical disability, and the Youth Olympic Games for teenage athletes. The IOC has had to adapt to the varying economic, political, and technological realities of the 20th century.
The Games have grown in scale to the point that nearly every nation is represented. Such growth has created numerous challenges, including boycotts, doping, bribery, and terrorism. At each event of the games, the Olympics and its media exposure provide unknown athletes with the chance to attain national, and in some cases, international fame. The Games also constitute a major opportunity for the host city and country to showcase themselves to the world.

The Olympic Games host a large amount of categories for each person. There are individual sports and team sports. Individual sports are the ones that require the participation of only one person. Some of the individual sports are triple jump, diving and track cycling. Here are some facts about these sports:

Triple jump:

  •    There are three phases of the triple jump: the "hop" phase, the "bound" or "step" phase, and the "jump" phase. These three phases are executed in one continuous sequence.
  •   The triple jump was a part of the inaugural modern Olympics in Athens, although at the time it consisted of two hops on the same foot and then a jump.
  •     The hop starts with the athlete jumping from the take off board on one leg, which for descriptive purposes will be the right leg. This leads to the familiar step-phase mid-air position, with the right take off leg trailing flexed at the knee, and the left leg now leading flexed at the hip and knee. The jumper then holds this position for as long as possible, before extending the knee of the leading left leg and then immediately beginning a powerful backward motion of the whole left leg, again landing on the runway with a powerful pawing action. The step landing forms the beginning of the take-off of the final phase (the jump), where the athlete utilizes the backward force from the left leg to take off again. The jump phase is very similar to the long jump although most athletes have lost too much speed by this time to manage a full hitch kick, and most use a hang or sail technique. When landing in the sand-filled pit, the jumper should aim to avoid sitting back on landing, or placing either hand behind the feet.

Diving:

  •        Although diving has been a popular pastime across the world since ancient times, the first modern diving competitions were held in England in the 1880s. The exact origins of the sport are unclear, though it likely derives from the act of diving at the start of swimming races (plunging).
  •     Fancy diving: a method of diving into a body of water used by gymnasts in Germany and Sweden since the early 19th century. As the landing was soft it allowed more elaborate gymnastic feats in midair as the jump could be made at a greater distance.uring the flight of the dive, one of four positions is assumed:
  •    During the flight of the dive, one of four positions is assumed:

1.     straight – with no bend at the knees or hips (the hardest of the four)
2.     pike – with knees straight but a tight bend at the hips (the medium in difficulty of the four.) The open pike is a variant where the arms are reached to the side, and the legs are brought straight out with a bend in the hips.
3.      tuck – body folded up in a tight ball, hands holding the shins and toes pointed (the easiest of the four.)
4.     free – indicates a twisting dive, and a combination of other positions. In the transition between two positions the diver may for example bend their legs or curve at the waist, and points will not be deducted for doing so.

Track cycling

  •     When cycling was in its infancy, wooden indoor tracks were laid which resemble those of modern velodromes, consisting of two straights and slightly banked turns.
  •    The most noticeable changes in over a century of track cycling have concerned the bikes themselves, engineered to be lighter and more aerodynamic to enable ever-faster times.
  •      One appeal of indoor track racing was that spectators could be easily controlled, and hence an entrance fee could be charged, making track racing a lucrative sport.

Listening:
